Our Mission

"There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.
One of these is roots; the other, wings." - Hodding Carter

Roots and Wings School offers a nature-based approach to learning providing educational opportunities to enhance children's healthy growth and development from ages 3 to 13. Nature is at the core of our emergent curriculum where we provide daily outdoor time, exploring the seasonal happenings of the natural world and infusing nature into the indoor spaces. Roots and Wings School believes that nature plays a vital role in the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development of young children by providing countless opportunities for discovery, creativity, problem-solving, and STEAM education. Children will experience the sights, sounds, scents, and textures of the outdoors and use developmentally appropriate materials and curriculum pacing that allows children to master skills to build a solid foundation. As children grow and develop from our littlest Seeds, to our Sprouts, we now offer a learning collaborative for children in grades 1-4.

Seeds & Sprouts

Preschool & Kindergarten

Roots and Wings School will spend a large portion of their day outside; rain, shine or snow! Our learning model follows the philosophies of Reggio, Mason, Montessori, and Waldorf styles with an emphasis on nature and community.

The Learning Garden

Grades 1-4

The Learning Garden is the response to an ever-growing community of families looking for child-led learning opportunities for children in grades 1st-4th.

Extended Care

Before & After School

Extended care services at Roots and Wings School are designed to help families find a safe, loving, engaging space for their child before and/or after school hours.

In Our Family's Words

Roots and Wings has been a warm and welcoming environment for our velcro-preschooler. Our girl has a very hard time separating from mom and dad-- even after attending the same place twice a week for the past 2 years. Fortunately, Theresa and her staff are incredible and drying her tears and getting her started with an activity to ease those separation jitters. We love that one of the main focuses of the school is outdoor time, no matter the weather. We also are so grateful for their child-first approach, encouraging play and community building over all else. There is so much time for academics in their lives-- let them be little while they can! We highly recommend the school and love their staff.
